With an area covering two square miles and an estimated population of 150,000, NYC’s Chinatown is the largest in the United States.  There are over 10 distinct Asian cuisines available in this neighborhood; and over 500 restaurants, bakeries, and tea shops line the streets for your exploration. 

Chinatown is a food shopper’s paradise offering fresh, unique food at a reasonable price.  We go into the stores, giving you the opportunity to view the many delicacies, take in the tantalizing aromas and taste their specialties.

NY Nosh

From the 1890’s to the 1940’s, the Jewish Lower East Side was teeming with nearly a half million Eastern European Jews.  Streets were packed with pushcarts and people.  Although living and working conditions were difficult, the Jewish immigrants were able to practice their religion openly.  There was a strong sense of family and community, which can still be seen today.  Many of the shops we visit have been in the neighborhood for over 70 years and are owned by the original families.

 You will learn the meaning of Kosher, and what food items are not Kosher and why.

Below are the stores we visit and foods* we try:

  • Knishery, dating to 1910—Knish D (occasionally)

  • Appetizing store, dating to 1914—Smoked and/or Pickled Fish D (occasionally)

  • Delicatessen, dating to 1888Hot Dog B

  • Old-fashioned Candy store—Halvah N

  • Matzoh factory, dating to 1925—Matzoh (when in production)

  • Bread bakery, dating to 1935—Bialy

  • Pickle shop—pickle tasting (3 types)

  • Pastry shop—Rugelach

 The Melting Pot

For generations, the Lower East Side has been home to the many immigrants coming to the US for a better life; and on The Melting Pot tour, you will get a glimpse into this diverse neighborhood. 

 Our walk takes us through the Hispanic and Jewish Lower East Side, Chinatown, and Little Italy.  Food brings people together, instilling a sense of security and happiness.  On this tour, you will learn the importance of food in each community, while identifying unique food items and their preparations.  

 This is a great introduction to a lively, fascinating area.

  • Kosher Bread Bakery—bialys**

  • Asian Bakery—Chinese pastry D, N, P

  • Asian Fish Market

  • Italian Gourmet shop—Italian cheese D

  • Pasta Shop

  • Italian Dairy—fresh mozzarella D and prosciutto ricotta balls D, P

  • Italian Pastry shop—mini pastry D

**On Saturdays, Kosher shops are closed and are replaced with:

  • Old-fashioned candy store—Halvah N

Reservations are necessary to guarantee your space. 

Tours last approximately 3 hours and include food samples, a bottle of water*, and an itinerary for $50/person. 

Dates subject to change.

Groups are limited to 8 people. 

 

*In an effort to build a greener New York, we will discontinue providing bottled water effective June 1, 2008.  We recommend bringing a reusable beverage container pre-filled with NYC tap water.
